The Eskmouth (Whitby) Scout Centre is the headquarters of the Eskmouth (Whitby) Scout Group, and is situated on the West side of town, near to the bus station, railway station and hospital. The Scout centre is only a few minutes’ walk from the town centre and the harbour. Limited car parking space is available. There is no outside area in the immediate vicinity for playing games, but the size of the centre adequately compensates for this. The beach, Pannett park and school playing fields are within easy walking distance.
The group opened its headquarters as a pack holiday/scout activity centre in 1984 and has proved both popular and desirable because of the facilities and its location in respect of water and moorland activities.
The building is a brick built ex drill hall, featuring a large main hall, a stage/instruction/leaders room, a kitchen with a fridge, microwave and catering size gas cooker and sufficient pots, pans, utensils, crockery and cutlery for 30 persons. There are 2 single showers, one male and one female, hot water in the kitchen and toilets, plus full central heating. The stage area is used by a local playgroup during weekdays and their equipment limits the floor area.
Visiting groups will need to provide their own beds, bedding, towels and tea-towels.
Being the headquarters of a large and active group, certain equipment can be made available; (please ask!) but flexibility will need to be exercised at certain times to fit in with normal meeting, although the group is only too pleased to assist visitors.
Whitby is a coastal area, and rules in P.O.R. concerning water activities and activities on the North Yorkshire Moors (mostly terrain zero) must be complied with.
Local tourist attractions include Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the Moors Centre, Danby, as well as the sea, the beach and the moors. Whitby has connections with Captain James Cook and is the “home” of Dracula. Further information can be obtained from the tourist information centre, Langborne Road, Whitby, Tel 01947 602674. The Scout centre is close to the town centre and its shops, which includes a Co-op supermarket.
